As Bosteels brews DeuS, Annie will offer her tips and tricks with regard to homebrewing the champagne method of brewing Belgian styles. Taste her take on the style in addition to a Chimay-like series based on her presentation.
Annie Johnson was the first woman recipient (since 1983) of the American Homebrewer Association’s prestigious Homebrewer of the Year award. Annie serves as PicoBrew’s Master Brewer-in-residence.
A National Beer Judge herself, Annie has won awards for her beers across all of the major BJCP styles. She has contributed dozens of award-winning recipes to the PicoBrew recipe library and continues to pioneer new techniques and processes in the PicoBrew lab as she delights visitors with her many sample beers on tap.
Born in Germany and encouraged by her parents who inspired her love of food and culture, Annie continues to brew with her old colleagues in California (and of course, support her Oakland A’s) as she spreads the good word and good brew up here in the Pacific Northwest.

Spoiler alert: Science says you’re wrong about pairing spicy foods with IPAs. So come learn the science behind the statement as well as the rationale behind this common beer pairing philosophy in this dynamic, interesting, and fun presentation.
Dr. Nicole Garneau is a taste scientist and keynote speaker who brings flavor science to the table. Her formal training in genetics and microbiology led her to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science where she directs the Genetics of Taste Lab and leads beer pairing research through the crowdtasting model pioneered by the Beer & Food Working Group.
In addition to her day job, she is the founder of three companies related to her work studying taste and her interest in food and beverage science. In this capacity, Dr. Garneau serves as keynote speaker and consultant to breweries, wineries, distilleries, food companies, and restaurants. She is the co-author of the Beer Flavor Map and co-founder of the company DraughtLab.
